1841 Strippy Floral Chintz Quilt, Signed
A magnificent Strippy quilt from the collection of quilt collector, historian, and author Maggi Gordon, and once displayed in the Pasadena County Museum in the crossing of the Atlantic exhibit in 2016, this quilt is made of the most beautifully romantic chintz strips with blush pink and green flowers against an earthy brown. Look carefully towards the bottom of one of the cream strips, and she is signed by her maker —Mary B. Raymond— and dated 1841. The natural dyes used in the fabrics have faded in the most beautiful way. Each of the strips looks like a watercolor painting. She’s in remarkable condition for her age with just a bit of fabric wear on the chintz that hugs the borders of the quilt where she was handled the most, and one very small tear on one of her floral bars. A couple, tiny pinprick stains, and a touch of aging to the cream fabric in a couple places. (See last several photos.) Zoom in to see the incredibly detailed, intricate quilting throughout. This quilt is a treasure that you do not come across every day. She is clean and was kept beautifully by Maggi Gordon in her collection and is ready to be cherished in her new home. A lovely larger size that will fully drape a queen bed and top a king.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
