19th C. Two-Tone Calico Green Irish Chain Quilt

sold

This incredibly beautiful and incredibly large green Irish Chain quilt was once part of the collection at the Packwood House Museum in Pennsylvania. The researchers at the museum had debates over her age, with guesses ranging from 1850 - 1880. Made with two different shades of green calico that are interspersed throughout the quilt, this quilt feels like a meadow of spring green. She is beautifully pieced and quilted in a chevron pattern with a gorgeous feather cable border. It is rare to come across a 19th century quilt of this size. She currently measures 110” x 111” but a previous owner shortened her by about 5 inches by neatly tucking, folding, and sewing one side. This was carefully done with no disruption to the pattern. (Please see photos to see how this was executed.) Untucked she would measure about 111”x115.” She is in excellent condition, and has been washed by hand and has just a few very light tiny stains and a few very light ones on back, as shown in the last two photos. For those looking for a quilt that will drape a king or even a California king size bed, don’t miss out on this rare opportunity! This quilt will come with copies of paperwork kept by the museum.

Measurements: 110” x 110” as is, and 110”x115” untucked (though no guarantee on condition inside the tuck)

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
