1886 Acorn Nine-Patch Quilt

But I am going to spend my life wisely. I’m going to be happy, and frivolous, and useful. Every morning, in the dark, I gather a few acorns and imagine, inside of them, the pale oak trees. In the spring, when I go away, I’ll take them with me, to my own country, which is a land of sun and restless ocean and moist woods. And I’ll dig down, I’ll hide each acorn in a cool place in the black earth.

-Mary Oliver / from Fletcher Oak

Like finding beautiful pops of color in the fall forest against a ground of brown leaves, this quilt’s jewel-toned squares glow against her exquisite neutral fabrics. Not all nine-patches are created equal, and this beautiful balance of color was surely executed by an artistic quilter. Her background fabric is a sweet floral print, and the quilter put in a charming frame of heather grey fabric with red horse shoes. Her back is another stunner, made of her fabric that has been reproduced over time for her beauty, an acorn and oak leaf print. And to top it off, some provenance! Someone who knew the maker or the receiver, printed a little name and date in two corners of the quilt — Minnie W. Garber 1886. This quilt has been washed by hand and is an excellent condition, just a couple of very light areas of staining that are only perceptible in certain lighting. (See photo.) Almost 150 years old, she is now ready to live her next life as a treasure in her new home.

Measurements: 70” x 71”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
