Let in through all the trees

Come the strange rays; the forest depths are bright;

Their sunny-coloured foliage, in the breeze,

Twinkles, like beams of light.

-William Cullen Bryant / from Autumn Woods

An intricately quilted piece using the Grandmother’s Pride block (in shape very similar to an Album or Chimney Sweep block) the colors and workmanship of this 1860s quilt take your breath away. The perfectly faded green, turkey red, and indigo create a beautiful backdrop to the variety of chestnut brown prints in each of the blocks. The back of the quilt perfectly showcases the beauty of the quilting; soft, thin, yet textural, this beauty is a feast to the quilt lover’s eyes. Washed by hand, she’s in great condition for her century and a half of age. The green used was not colorfast and the fading in some places has created some lovely blue tones. One particular brown fabric used by the quilter in a few of the blocks has worn away, yet the dense quilting holds those blocks together beautifully. A few loose stitches as shown. There is some very light scattered staining throughout the back but nothing dark. She has been washed by hand and hung to dry and is ready to grace her new home.

Measurements: 74” x 86”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
