Sea of Squares Postage Stamp Quilt

$695.00
sold

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.

-Elizabeth Barrett Browning, from How Do I Love Thee?

A sea of squares, from calicos to feedsacks, span the width of this large postage stamp quilt from around the 1940s. It’s hard to imagine the patience it must have taken to piece hundreds of these squares together! They were clearly cut from all kinds of scraps and remnants, including some interesting woven fabrics. Upon acquisition, this quilt had over 60 squares needing some attention, and well over five hours of repair work were put into this to give her the renewed life she deserves. A beautiful blue and red border, with a rich almost chalky quality, frames all the little squares, bringing out the many reds and blues contained within. An especially scrappy quality about this quilt is that the feedsack fabrics and indigos seem to be crowded along a couple sides, whereas the center consists mainly of older calico fabrics — likely evidence that the quilter used what she had as she went along. In overall very good condition, with some squares that have touches of wear and some aging, and one particular woven red and white fabric that has a touch of bleed, this quilt is sturdy and ready to live her next best life. She has been thoroughly washed by hand and is clean and ready for her new home!

Measurements: 82” x 88”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
