Chestnut Sixteen-Patch on Point Quilt

$545.00
sold

Telling a story is like reaching into a granary full of wheat and drawing out a handful. There is always more to tell than can be told.

-Wendell Berry, from Jayber Crow

A wonderfully cozy scrappy quilt from the late 1800s with a beautiful array of old fabrics organized into 16-patch blocks-on-point against a lovely chestnut brown background. If you zoom in, you can see that the brown fabric is made of tiny white pinstripes and that some of the squares are pieced with two different fabrics. The way the maker chose the layout of the various colors has an unexpected element that is visually pleasing. The neutral brown and white blocks are a lovely contrast to the periwinkle blue and red. Though not heavy, the quilt has enough batting to give it a lightly, puffy crinkly texture and classify it as a slightly more mid-weight quilt. Turn the quilt to her back and you will see a couple remnant feed sack prints of sacks originally printed by a sheeting factory — a memory of the thrift and history of the time period. This quilt has been washed by hand, and is in very good condition. A few very small marks when held up to the light that are not very noticeable and a slight waviness to the edges. This harder-to-find brown quilt is going to become a favorite in your collection!

Measurements: 64” x 78”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards Safelight, a North Carolina-based nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and child abuse. For more, see safelightfamily.org

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
