Lester Family Community Quilt

A beautiful piece of history from the Lester family of Argyle, New York, this quilt has been loved and is now being passed on to a new owner. Nancy reached out to us at Flying Geese, in support of our work, and hoped that this quilt might find a loving home.

She recalls: “I got this from my mother when she passed over 20 years ago, she called it a community quilt but I don't know much about the names on the quilt. My mom had gotten it from my grandmother but I believe that it actually originated from my great grandmother. There are many last names on the quilt but many are Lesters, which was my grandfather's mother’s maiden name.”

Family, friendship, and community quilts like this were popular during the mid-1800s and a favorite here at Flying Geese for the way in which they remind us of the collaborative work of women’s hands. Signed by a number of Lester family members and others who may have been family members or close friends, this quilt is beautifully pieced with gorgeous fabrics in an array of period colors. This quilt came to us in great structural condition, but never washed, and after her long needed soak she is now clean and very usable. She does retain several light stains on front, one very small tear, and and some larger stains on the back. A couple small spots of change on her overdyed green and her line of sun fading speak of her history. A treasure to take home, study, and love.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
