Little Red [Summer] House Quilt

$0.00
sold

When seedlings blossomed in the eaves,

When branches scratched upon the door

And rain came splashing through the halls,

We made our minor, brief repairs,

And sang upon the crumbling stairs

And danced upon the sodden floors.

-Mary Oliver / from The House

Twenty-five beautiful simple red-roofed houses in a lovely soft palate of turn-of-the-century calico fabrics. A charming school house quilt like this is a pretty rare bird. The blocks are framed with indigo sashing and accented by a whimsical polka-dotted gingham fabric, and the white spaces are made of a white calico. In contrast, a bright solid Turkey Red makes up each roof and foundation. And an extra charming touch? The dotted pink-red chambray fabric that was used for the backing! A favorite detail is a beautiful roof repair, done in a matching fabric. (See photo!) Whether draped on a bed or folded neatly on a quilt rack, this will bring a smile harm to a passerby. She’s in very good condition for being over a century old. There are a few tiny spots of typical wear to the turkey red fabric and one little quick stitch repair as shown in the last photo. She has been washed by hand and hung to dry and is clean and ready to bring joy to her new owner!

Measurements: 74” x 75”

PLEASE SELECT SHIPPING FOR QUILT ($20), NOT FOR A SMALL QUILT PIECE ($10). ORDER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHIP OTHERWISE.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards House of Ruth — an organization in DC that supports women (and their children) who are victims of domestic violence.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
