Monogrammed Oak Leaf Quilt

A true antique treasure, this Oak Leaf quilt from circa 1860 is a quilt of magnificent workmanship. From her beautiful leafy border to the quilting that echoes the organic motifs in the appliqué (with lots of hearts sprinkled in!) this is a quilt you will enjoy admiring on your lap or on a wall. The indigo fabric itself has undergone some beautiful fading. It likely came from two different batches as one has faded more than the other. In one corner is stamped a name that is likely that of a previous owner, and in another corner, a beautifully embroidered set of red initials that reads ‘CK,’ perhaps the maker’s initials or those of the first recipient. This quilt has been washed by hand, and is in overall great condition for her almost two centuries of age. Just a few tiny places of lift on the appliqué in a few places, and some expected slight discoloration on the white background fabric in a few places. (See photos.) May this go to dwell in the home of the new owner who will cherish her and give her many, many more years of life.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards Hilliard House in Richmond, VA — an organization local to Flying Geese that provides short-term emergency shelter for children and adults who are on their way to a permanent home. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
