A Lady Red Cathedral Window Quilt
This vintage beauty is a visual stunner and the prettiest Cathedral Window we’ve come across in a while. With her smaller-than-usual windows expertly hand-stitched together, her scattering of reds is mesmerizing on her crisp white background. She’d be an exquisite accent for a bed or sofa. Already weighty with so many layers of folded fabric, batting is not typically used in Cathedral Window quilts. We love seeing the backbone of individually hand-pieced squares on the reverse. One of our favorite quirks of this quilt is the random squares of manila-colored fabric in a few edge squares, probably a sign that the quilter must have run out of the white fabric used in the rest of the quilt. See photos for these details. In very good vintage condition. Please note a few small stains, hardly visible because of the nature of the quilt with its colors and shadows.
UPDATE: We decided to give this quilt a cold bath to prevent any red fabric bleed surprises for the new owner. Bad news first: One shade of red was not completely colorfast. Good news: Only 14 out of the 1,139 windows were made with that fabric. Bleed is very light and localized and most of those windows are along the edges of the quilt. See photos added at the end. More good news: You know the full story.
Measurements: 63” x 77”
All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.
10% of profits from this sale will go towards Gray Panthers, a US-based advocacy organization for the elderly whose mission is to combat ageism and achieve social justice through intergenerational collaboration.
Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.

Her annual secret keeps!
A Lady white, within the Field
In placid Lily sleeps!
