Single Irish Chain Quilt with Sawtooth Border
Pattern: Single Irish Chain with Sawtooth Border
Date: c. 1860-1870
Provenance/Notes:
The most beautiful rendition of an age-old classic pattern, this quilt is an incredibly densely quilted masterpiece from the mid 1800s, made with flower studded deep blue indigo fabric against a creamy white.
The beauty of the quilting cannot be understated! See the diagonal clamshell quilting on the border alternating with the narrow lines, and the daisy-like wreaths in the negative spaces. Looking at the number of stitch lines that go through each indigo square and triangle shows off how narrow the quilting lines are — about 3/16” of an inch apart.
The creamy back is made of lovely naturally mottled homespun fabric pieced in narow panels
Notice the gorgeous rare indigo fabric with orange chrome overlay used in the sawtooth border and trim
A couple pieces of the cream fabric used on the front have aged to a slightly different tone — a beautiful bit of patina
Washed by hand and in excellent condition with just one tiny light mark (hardly noticeable). See last photo. This quilt has a wonderful hand.
Measurements: 76” x 90”
$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. Price for smaller items have been adjusted (lowered) to account for the lower shipping cost.

15% of profits from every quilt sale in this next collection will go towards supporting the work of the women at the Sewing Society at the Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home in Louisville Kentucky, where generations of women have used their quilting skills to support the work of the children and families cared by the organization.. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
