Sky at Dusk Bars Quilt

sold

A beautiful balance of color and geometry, aided by the wonderful fades of time, this subtle and moody bar quilt circa 1915 is a work of art. The fabric is a type of washed sateen cotton that has a smooth texture, which shows off the details in the quilting. The background color has faded from a light fawn color to a mauve in various places, which gives the quilt a lovely depth. This quilt came from the collection of Maggi Gordon —an author, editor, collector, and quiltmaker with a special interest in the history of quilts and quilt making. This piece, along with the 1890s Floral Strippy quilt, was featured in the “Crossing the Atlantic Exhibition” at the Pasadena Museum of History, 2016. This quilt has been washed by hand, and is in strong condition but does have some issues to note — a few small marks, one water stain, and some wear and tear along the back edge of the trim where she was tacked on a wall and a bit of tape residue remains. She has a lightly stitched pole sleeve for hanging if desired. For those who don’t mind some of these age scars, she makes a stunning accent folded on a chair, foot of bed, or used as a cozy throw.

Measurements: 68” x 76”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
