Garden Bed Triple Irish Chain Quilt, c. 1870

sold

Once part of the quilt colllection at the Ames Gallery in Berkeley, California, this Triple Irish Chain quilt is a quilting masterpiece, rendered in a restrained but scrappy palette of browns and reds. (See photo for original gallery tag and note that size is incorrect on tag.) She is a wonderful ode to the beginnings of spring, with her lovely green trim like the newly budding leaves, and the red and brown the color of a robin’s feathers. The quilting is truly phenomenal in this piece. Notice the feather cables that crisscross in the negative spaces, which are executed on a smaller than usual scale, giving the quilt an incredible texture. She’s the perfect size to enjoy over the back of a sofa or to snuggle under for a nap and is one to truly cherish. She has been washed by hand and is in excellent condition for her age, with just a few places with touches of toning (see last photo) and one tiny light stain and a bit of light staining on the back, but nothing that stands out. She’s structurally in excellent condition and ready for her new owner to enjoy for years to come.

Measurements: 60” x 80”

$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice. Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
