Spring Oak Leaf and Poppies Quilt, c. 1850s
An absolutely stunning Oak Leaf quilt made by a master quilter(s) and once part of the collection at the Packwood House Museum in Pennsylvania, this quilt is a true treasure. She is made from the prettiest appliquéd spring yellow green fabric dotted with tiny red poppies and framed by a red sawtooth border. But the appliqué is almost second to the incredibly beautiful quilting throughout. It’s hard to imagine the number of hours that went into quilting this piece, from the feathered wreaths to the narrow lines of quilting over the Oak Leaf blocks, and the feathered quilting throughout the border. This quilt would be beautiful both on a bed, folded and displayed, or on a wall, using the pole sleeve stitched along one side. She’s in great condition for her age —her white still crisp— and just has a few very minor issues to note: a couple very small spots of light discoloration on the oak leaves, a couple places of surface wear, a few very light small stains — nothing that stands out. She has been washed by hand and is ready to become a special addition to your collection. Documentation from the Packwood House Museum will be included with the quilt.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards YWCA Queens in New York, a non-profit “dedicated to [their] mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” See more at ywcaqueens.org. This donation is honor of Jennifer’s grandmother, who helped found and lead the YWCA Queens many years ago, and whose love for art, flowers, and quilting inspired this collection.
Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
