Stars Upon Stars Calico Quilt

How can I hope to be friends

with the hard white stars

whose flaring and hissing are not speech

but pure radiance?

How can I hope to be friends

with the yawning spaces between them

where nothing, ever is spoken?

Tonight, at the edge of the field,

I stood very still, and looked up,

and tried to be empty of words.

-Mary Oliver / from Stars

Nine radiant stars with calico red centers grace this beautiful old quilt from the late 1800s. Each star is a burst of wonderful calico fabrics, six of them with cheddar points. The trim is a bright red and echoes the star centers. But the stars themselves are not the only event. The quilting on this piece is dense and intricate, with floral and vine motifs throughout. It’s hard to imagine the number of hours that went into constructing this piece. This quilt has been used and loved over time, but has been carefully and lovingly restored. The stars underwent some repair by the expert hands of Jackie Copeland of Timeless Quilters. (The very center star has a bit of repair that was done by someone less experienced. See photo.) The quilt was thoroughly washed by hand and hung to dry. Most of the fabric is in good shape but there is a little bit of wear on the white along one edge, a little bit of scattered staining that remains (most of it very small, the only larger one is very light) and some overall aging of the white fabric, as shown in photos. If you can embrace a bit of the wear and history, she’ll bring you much joy and will be a quilt to love and enjoy for many, many more years.

Measurements: 72” x 83”

PLEASE SELECT SHIPPING FOR QUILT ($20), NOT FOR A SMALL QUILT PIECE ($10). ORDER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHIP OTHERWISE.

All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.

15% of profits from this sale will go towards House of Ruth — an organization in DC that supports women (and their children) who are victims of domestic violence.

Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.

Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
