1895 Crazy Velvet Little Quilt
Tell me a story.
In this century, and moment, of mania,
Tell me a story.
Make it a story of great distances, and starlight.
The name of the story will be Time,
But you must not pronounce its name.
Tell me a story of deep delight.
-Robert Penn Warren, from Tell Me a Story
A treasure of a quilt from 1895, this velvet and silk Crazy quilt has the most exquisite details. With a horse rider printed in gold in the middle, a few salient motifs are stitched into various other blocks, which spark the imagination and beg to tell a story. A couple ladders, an umbrella, two boats, and the boot, and one large golden velvet patch, cut and stitched in the shape of a boot. The embroidered details that weave the patches together or exquisitely done in a variety of different colored threads. The wide teal velvet border, that has faded to perfection, frames the work beautifully. Like most crazy quilts of this age with silk patches, a few of the silk pieces have wear or have worn away, see photo. But they do not detract from the beauty of this piece. The quilt is backed with a pretty mint blue cotton (possibly a silk cotton blend?), that has a few small stains. A piece to cherish and grace a wall in your home or add to a collector’s collection.
Measurements: 41” x 45.5”
$20 flat rate shipping includes insurance coverage for the full purchase amount. If you need shipping outside the 48 contiguous states (Alaska, Hawaii, worldwide), please choose Local Pickup at checkout and reach out for a separate shipping invoice.
All quilts come with a muslin tag noting any known history, and an archival Micron pen for you to add yours.
15% of profits from this sale will go towards Safelight, a North Carolina-based nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault and child abuse. For more, see safelightfamily.org
Note on antique/vintage quilts: Many of the quilts we sell have been loved, slept under, washed, sunshine dried, taken on picnics, slept on underneath the stars, and lived lifetimes before arriving at our doorstep. You can expect to see repairs made by later generations, fraying around the edges or in certain blocks, discoloration or yellowing, cotton/wool batting—or as we like to call them, tiny sheep—peeking through. They are imperfect, but their imperfections are charming to us and we hope you feel the same. They are reminders to us of their old age and the history to which they've been a witness. We try our best to note any imperfections, but it’s possible we might miss one here and there. Well-crafted, handmade antique quilts in their original form are becoming scarcer, and we believe it's vital that we preserve them and continue to love them, imperfections and all.
Because these quilts are one-of-a-kind and we are a tiny enterprise, we do not accept returns; please review all photos and the description carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
